Weird Permissions Lost Access to an Ubuntu Directory

0

It all started when I was trying to change the owner on a directory on my Ubuntu machine. In case that matters, I was doing it in a terminal session running inside an Emacs buffer.

Here is what happened:

  1. Initial state

xxx@xxx-desktop:~$ ls -la /etc/apache2/sites-available/
total 76
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Feb 7 20:43 .
drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 4096 Feb 7 19:45 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1567 Feb 7 20:06 000-default.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1332 May 20 2015 000-default.conf~
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6338 Apr 5 2016 default-ssl.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 328 Feb 7 20:43 home.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 444 Nov 29 2015 home.conf~
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 419 Feb 7 20:20 localhost.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 450 Feb 5 21:51 localhost.conf~
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 450 Feb 5 21:50 localhost.conf.save
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 482 Nov 29 2015 phpmyadmin.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 935 Nov 29 2015 phpmyadmin.conf~
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 479 Nov 29 2015 phpmyadmin.dev.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 487 Nov 29 2015 phpmyadmin.dev.conf~

  1. I did this xxx@xxx-desktop:~$ sudo chmod -0755 /etc/apache2/sites-available/*

  2. The result is this:

xxx@xxx-desktop:~$ ls -la /etc/apache2/sites-available/
total 76
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Feb 7 20:43 .
drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 4096 Feb 7 19:45 ..
---------- 1 root root 1567 Feb 7 20:06 000-default.conf
---------- 1 root root 1332 May 20 2015 000-default.conf~
---------- 1 root root 6338 Apr 5 2016 default-ssl.conf
---------- 1 root root 328 Feb 7 20:43 home.conf
---------- 1 root root 444 Nov 29 2015 home.conf~
---------- 1 root root 419 Feb 7 20:20 localhost.conf
---------- 1 root root 450 Feb 5 21:51 localhost.conf~
---------- 1 root root 450 Feb 5 21:50 localhost.conf.save
---------- 1 root root 482 Nov 29 2015 phpmyadmin.conf
---------- 1 root root 935 Nov 29 2015 phpmyadmin.conf~
---------- 1 root root 479 Nov 29 2015 phpmyadmin.dev.conf
---------- 1 root root 487 Nov 29 2015 phpmyadmin.dev.conf~

Now I cannot seem to be able to do anything with that directory. My question is two-fold: how can I fix it and what happened?
