How to remove the extra margin on top and bottom of a long listing

0

Problem: A long listing in a two-column document occupies the entire column, and doesn't allow any text to appear above or below it.
What I would like to achieve: a listing which is positioned at the top of the page that doesn't occupy the entire column.

Tried: When I remove a couple of lines from the listing, the problem disappears. Also, removing float solves the problem of extra margin, but it breaks the positioning.

I have read the related questions on the forum, but couldn't find my answer.
