How to change resolution?

0

I've freshly installed debian 9.6.0 stretch. My screen resolution is 1280x1024 whereas the display supports 1920x1080.

I've tried to resolve the issue following the post here, but I couldn't get past:

xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default

Output for lspci -nn | grep VGA:

username@debian:~$ lspci -nn | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Barts XT [Radeon HD 6870] [1002:6738]
username@debian:~$

and for xrandr:

username@debian:~$ xrandr
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 640 x 400, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1920 x 1080
default connected primary 1280x1024+0+0 0mm x 0mm
1280x1024 0.00*
1280x960 0.00
1024x768 0.00
800x600 0.00
640x480 0.00
720x400 0.00
1920x1080_60.00 59.96
username@debian:~$

What am I supposed to do?
