User limit of inotify instances

I have a java app that won't start and I'm getting the following error:
java.io.IOException: User limit of inotify instances reached or too many open files
Is there any way to tell what on my system is using up my inotify instances?
When I run
lsof | wc -l
After about 5 minutes it returns a value of 19889924. Tha seems like an extreme amount of files to be open and I'd love to figure out what's doing that. My user inotify limit is 500 and I guess I've exceeded that (is there a way to tell what the actual number of user inotifies are in use?)
