縦貫線 （じゅうかんせん）は、台湾海峡に沿って基隆市仁愛区の基隆駅から高雄市三民区の高雄駅に至る台湾鉄路管理局の鉄道路線である。途中の竹南駅から彰化にかけては2つの経路があり、海側を走るルートは通称海岸線 、山側を走るルートは台中線（山線）と呼ばれる。

概要


台湾の鉄道路線の中では最も古く、また最長の路線でもある。


台湾西部の人口過密地帯を走るため、日本統治時代から台湾の最重要幹線と位置づけられている。


台鉄は、はじめ基隆から台北・台中・台南を通って高雄に至る縦貫線を建設した。海岸線から離れた所に敷設されているのは、軍部が外国艦隊による鉄道への艦砲射撃を恐れたからという説がある。


その後発生した滞貨事件のために海よりに平行して大甲を経由して竹南と彰化を結ぶ海線を建設した。正式名称は海岸線で、竹南以北と彰化以南の累計距離は（当時は海岸線経由のほうが距離が短かったため）海岸線経由で計算するようになった。台中を通って竹南から彰化まで通じる元の線は山線となった。
山線は何度も路線変更されており、現在は全線複線化され、距離も海線より短いことから、海線を通るより到達時間は短い。


現在、一般には北段、海岸線、南段をあわせて縦貫線と呼び、山線は別に台中線と呼ぶ。しかしながら、台中線の旅客輸送量は海岸線より多く、竹南以北と彰化以南の累計距離は（路線改良により現在は台中線経由のほうが距離が短いため）台中線経由で計算している。



歴史


1891年に基隆から台北にかけての区間が開業したのが縦貫線の始まりである。
続いて1893年には新竹までの区間が延伸され、台中までの測量工事も行われた。
1895年に締結された下関条約により台湾は日本領となるが、効率的な台湾統治を行うために必要とされた縦貫線の建設工事は続けられ、1900年には台湾総督府の手によって南部の高雄・台南間が開業。
以後は北部と南部からそれぞれ延伸工事が続けられ、着工から17年経った1907年に全通した。
