The ampersand sign in my bibliography is using different font than in my main LaTeX file, which looks like this:

enter image description here

and the bibliography shows this:

enter image description here

I'm using IEEEtran bibliography style, and I'd like to have ampersands in my bibliography like in the first example

You would also get the italic ampersand if you wrote textit{blah & blub} in your document, so I would not change this. After all the font designer put a lot of thought into this. Indeed, for people familiar with the font, this would look extremely weird. And even for unsuspecting onlookers the fact that the roman ampersand is not slanted at all may look very weird in the otherwise slanted italic shape.

all the letters have a different shape in an italic font. Perhaps g and & more than others, but it would be odd to choose a different font for each character,
