How to work on a long directory in parallel groups

0

I have a directory with ~10000 files.

I want to pass from this directory, blocks of filenames splitted by 500 to run some command on the single file in this way:

my_command() {
for i in (eventual group of 500); do echo "do something with $i"; done
}

my_command <first group 500 from my_dir> &
p1=$!

my_command <second group 500 from my_dir> &
p2=$!

...
my_command <last 500 from my_dir> &
p21=$!

wait $p1
wait $p2
...
wait $p21

...do something else here on...

How can I do something like this?

  • There's gnu.org/software/parallel ... may be available as a package for your distro?
