Display freezes when HDMI is not connected

0

I have an Acer Aspire E 15 on which I installed Archlinux with XFCE as my DE. However, I find that the laptop's display completely freezes as soon as I disconnect the HDMI cable to my external monitor.

Basically, once I disconnect the HDMI cable, the screen freezes. I can still move the mouse and type but the display doesn't update. If I run a command while the display is frozen, it works fine, but I won't see any output.

I've tried fiddling around with various settings in xrandr and xorg config, but to no avail. My experiments have led to conclusion that setting the HDMI output to off somehow causes the laptop's display to freeze as well. I suspect this is some issue with Xorg setup.
