How to compile simple pdfTeX file?

0

I've been using XeLaTeX but I had to compile today using TeX engine. Someone advised to use pdfTeX but I ran into a problem. None of the code that I type compiles. First it was "undefined control sequence documentclass", then I figured out it's a LaTeX control sequence that wouldn't run with pdfTeX. When I type a word or two without control sequences of any kind, I get "entering extended mode" and it hangs. Observing how the TeXworks behaves, I suspect I won't get a pdf file generated and it adds to the problem because I need to see the output. But to begin with, I need to be able to compile correctly first so I would really appreciate if you provide a simple example of pdfTeX code that runs right away.
