Recreating a 17th century book

For whatever reason, I decided to undertake a hobby project of recreating (the first page of) Sir Thomas Browne's 16th century Urne Burial in TeX and friends.

I was inspired by this effort. So the questions I have are -




  • How does one go about replicating the dropped capitals? I can only think of stripping them from a high resolution scan of the original page.

  • Preliminary inspection of the letters makes me think this a variant of the Garamond typefaces. Is this correct? The italicized Urne-Buriall in the second line does not look like Garamond but...
