Where are private and public keys stored?

-2

I am confused by https://www.ssh.com/ssh/host-key

Host keys are key pairs, typically using the RSA, DSA, or ECDSA algorithms. Public host keys are stored on and/or distributed to SSH clients, and private keys are stored on SSH servers.

I created key pair on client host, and copy public key to server host. So I guess it is describing something different? Thanks.

You're likely confusing the server authentication and user authentication processes - see for example What is the difference between authorized_keys and known_hosts file for SSH?

  • the host keys are usually stored in /etc/ssh for sshd and /etc/dropbear for dropbear.
