Check if command is succesfull without using if statement

0

Here is a big problem I have. I want to write a command and execute print out the message if command is not successful. So is there a way to do following in single line:

gcc -c test.cpp
if [ $? -ne 0 ]
then
echo "this failed so badly"
fi

I know this line:

gcc test.c && [ $? -ne 0 ] && echo "Hell"

will not output anything because gcc will be successful and [ $? -ne 0 ] will fail thus echo will not be executed. So how do I exectue [ $? -ne 0 ] if gcc fails?

Thank you in advance.

  • gcc -c test.cpp || echo FAIL

  • @UncleBilly can I than follow that with && and some more commands?

  • Yes, but take care because || and && have the same precedence in the shell language. a || b && c will be parsed as { a || b; } && c, not a || { b && c; }
