Installing linuxbrew on CentOS 6.8

I have installed linuxbrew, starting from the sh $(curl ...) command that's given at linuxbrew.sh. I installed in my home directory, rather than in /home/linuxbrew/ as they would prefer: I can't use sudo for any of this - the system is maintained very conservatively, and ~/ is my only playground.
The installation seemed to go fine. I updated my PATHs as directed, re-logged in, and ran brew update. It began by trying to install curl's dependencies, starting with glibc, and balked:
checking if gcc -B/home/charrison/.linuxbrew/opt/binutils/bin/ is
sufficient to build libc... no
:
*** These critical programs are missing or too old: compiler
(I assume this refers to gcc, and not to a program called "compiler".)
The gcc that's installed on the system is version 4.4.7. Linux is 2.6.32. These fulfill linuxbrew's dependencies.
brew doctor tells me that git isn't installed, and says to run brew install git. When I do, I get the same set of errors about glibc.
I think I'm missing something essential. How do I get this installation off the ground?
linux homebrew
