TeXMaker won't compile, just installed

I just downloaded and installed TeXMaker, and just to test it, I created a new document with just

documentclass{article}
begin{document}
a
end{document}

However, after I saved it (without spaces or special characters or accents), whenever I press Quick Build, it just gives me an error message with

Could not start the command.
pdflatex -synctex=1 -interaction=nonstopmode %.tex

What am I doing wrong?

  • Welcome to Tex.SE. Did you install miktex/texlive?

  • Unless it was included with the download on the TeXMaker site, I didn't. Where can I download these?

    Use your favorite search engine and you will find their address. TeXMaker and friends are editors: they make writing in TeX&Co easier, but to compile the documents, you need a TeX engine that has to be downloaded separately. TeX distros are the best way to do it. MikTeX and ProTeXt are designed for Windows users, texlive is cross-platform (and for this reason may need more knowledge about your OS than MikTeX).

  • But before that, I suggest you should uninstall TeXmaker first, before installing MiKTeX or TeXLive, etc.
