What are the most dangerous situations a newb should know to avoid concerning sym and hard links?

0

Originally this post was titled poorly and asked the question, "How can you make a shortcut like in Windows that isn't going to potentially be accidentally deleted, like if you didn't know you were deleting your original file and not your symlink.

I sort of found that you can verify that just by using an ls -l to verify that the the file is marked with and l and not a d or an - ...

So in the spirit of having a useful question, I've changed it to ask, what horrible complications can arise as a result poor use of symlinks and hardlinks?

    (1) Have you ever read a book whose title was “It was a Dark and”, and then page 1 began “stormy night”? Of course not. Please use the title box for a title for your question, not just the first line of the question body.  (2) It sounds like you are talking about symbolic links. What “complications” and “trickiness” are you talking about?

  • Can't really read your language, my English is not good enough. Do you want .desktop files as described in XDG standard? specifications.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest

  • @G-Man (1) I was having trouble fitting the whole thought into one sentence appropriate for the header title space. That said, I understand that there is a method around here that is expected and all I can say is thanks for letting me know. I'm very new to this. I'll improve. (2) I was made to think that it was fairly easy as a newb to confuse which file is the symlink and which is the original, and if you accidentally delete the wrong one, that you lose them both. After some reading, I think you just have to run a ls -l and make sure you delete the l file, not the - or d labeled file.

  • @炸鱼薯条德里克 I am not yet familiar with the document that you just shared, but... either way, I think it is something I should read. Thank you, but I believe the sym link works for my purposes after all. I believe the question is answered without an answer.
